Monument of Poet Ivan Gundulic

This grand statue is located in Gundulic Square, in the Old Town of Dubrovnik, just behind the Cathedral. The square is surrounded by elegant buildings that house shops, bars, and restaurants. The statue pays tribute to Dzivo Franov Gundulic, a poet, lyricist, and dramatist who is also known as Ivan Gundulic. The square where the statue stands is named in his honor. Gundulic was born in Dubrovnik (then known as the Republic of Ragusa, now in Croatia) on January 8, 1589, and passed away there on December 8, 1638, at the age of almost 50. He was the most prominent poet of the Baroque era during his lifetime. Today, he is considered the national poet of Croatia and his image can be found on the 50 Kuna banknote (equivalent to roughly £5.60). The life-sized bronze statue depicts Gundulic dressed in fine clothing and wearing what appears to be a wig. It stands on a small octagonal pedestal supported by an ornate four-sided plinth. At the base, there are two steps that serve as a popular resting place and meeting point. When we visited on Tuesday, June 7th, there were several market stalls nearby selling local products.

This historical building is truly one-of-a-kind and even managed to captivate my 18 and 13-year-old children. It has been beautifully preserved and restored, making it a sight to behold. Moreover, the place is brimming with fascinating historical anecdotes that pique one's curiosity. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Pope John Paul II himself had stayed here in the past, a fact I was unaware of prior to my visit. Furthermore, the premises are kept impeccably clean and tidy, enhancing the overall experience.
