National park Kornati

Croatia is a country renowned for its stunning coastline and breathtaking natural beauty. One gem that stands out among its many attractions is the National Park Kornati. Situated in the central part of the Adriatic Sea, this archipelago of 89 islands, islets, and reefs is a true paradise for nature lovers and adventurers.

The Islands

The islands of Kornati are characterized by their rugged and barren landscape, with rocky cliffs and crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounding them. These uninhabited islands offer a unique experience for visitors, as they remain untouched by human intervention. The lack of freshwater sources and vegetation has contributed to the preservation of their pristine beauty.

Each island has its own distinct charm and allure. From the stunning cliffs of Mana and the majestic panoramic views from Klobucar, to the tranquil beaches of Ravni Zakan and the ancient ruins of Tureta, Kornati offers a diverse range of landscapes and experiences that will captivate any traveler.

Marine Life

Aside from its mesmerizing islands, Kornati is also home to a rich and vibrant marine ecosystem. The crystal-clear waters teem with an abundance of marine life, making it a haven for divers and snorkelers. Exploring the underwater world of Kornati, visitors can encounter colorful coral reefs, schools of fish, and even rare species such as the Mediterranean monk seal.

Furthermore, the park is a popular spot for sailing enthusiasts, with numerous bays and coves offering sheltered and picturesque anchorages. Navigating through its turquoise waters, visitors can discover hidden gems and secluded beaches that are only accessible by boat.

Preservation Efforts

The National Park Kornati was established in 1980 with the aim of protecting this unique archipelago and its natural wonders. The park management is dedicated to preserving the delicate balance of the ecosystem and ensuring the sustainability of the marine life and biodiversity.

Visitors to the park are encouraged to explore its beauty responsibly. Fishing, hunting, and camping are strictly regulated to minimize the impact on the environment. The park also offers educational programs and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and the fragility of this remarkable ecosystem.

Visiting National Park Kornati

Getting to National Park Kornati is relatively easy, as it is located near the cities of Zadar and Sibenik. Regular boat tours and excursions are available from these cities, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of the park through guided tours or private boat rentals.

Whether you are an adventurous traveler, nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, a visit to National Park Kornati is a must when exploring Croatia. This place is located in a remote area and it is quite interesting. It takes about a 30-40 minute car ride from Sibenik to get here. It has layers of history, ranging from pre-Christian times, Roman era, and the presence of various Slavic peoples. It even includes remnants from the war in the early 1990s. Some people consider it to be the most significant undeveloped historical site in Europe. However, there is one issue - there is very little or no signage or information available. Therefore, I would highly recommend visiting this place only with a guide. We hired a private guide for our trip to Krka Falls and incorporated this site (as well as the auto museum in Sibenik) into our itinerary. The guide was very knowledgeable and passionate, making the experience well worth it. If you decide to explore this place on your own, I do not recommend it as you will only see old walls, stones, and graves without understanding their historical context. However, if you go with a guide, you will be able to uncover hundreds of years of history and truly enjoy the experience.
