Church of St. John the Baptist
User reviews
The Church of St. John, originally known as the Church of St. Trinity, is situated in one of the most prominent city squares. During the 15th century, the church became affiliated with the fraternity of St. John, leading to its new name. This distinguished 14th-century structure is renowned for its balustrade staircase on the side facing the street. It is believed to be the creation of the famed Sibenik builder, Ivan Pribislavic. The balustrade features a series of relief angels' heads at the top, while a heavily worn lion stands guard at the bottom. The church's four-story bell tower houses the town's oldest mechanical clock. The clock face is adorned with Roman numerals and a single hour hand. It was brought from Drnis during the Cretan War and installed into the clock. Unfortunately, the dome of the bell tower had to be removed in 1862 due to a powerful earthquake. Adjacent to the bell tower, there is a Renaissance window created by Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino. Above the window, there is a relief of a lamb, with an angel positioned beneath it, with its wings spread open. This masterpiece showcases the brilliance of the Dalmatian Renaissance. Regrettably, the church was closed during our visit, preventing us from experiencing its interior.

The views from the Fortress are absolutely breathtaking. However, I would highly recommend taking the roadway to the fortress instead of the unmade path, as it can be quite challenging for those with limited mobility. Once you reach the fortress, you'll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of Sibenik and the surrounding islands. There are newly constructed toilets available, which were impeccably clean. Additionally, there is a charming little cafe that serves incredible iced coffee. Two members of our group even described it as the best they had ever tasted. I must also mention the exceptional assistance we received from Senka, the lady at the entrance booth. She not only provided us with valuable local knowledge about Sibenik, but also recommended some great restaurants and cafes to visit.

St Francis' Church and monastery
User reviews
St. Francis’ Church, which overlooks Gradski Park, was constructed during the latter half of the 14th century and is designed in the Gothic style with a single nave. The main entrance boasts exquisite carved wood doors, with remnants of 14th century frescoes located in the lunette above. In the 15th century, the Holy Cross Chapel was added to the north side of the church, and it houses a renowned organ built by Petar Nakic in 1762. On the southern side of the church stands the Franciscan monastery, which dates back to the 14th century. The interior of the church was renovated in the Baroque style, featuring a beautifully painted coffered ceiling from 1674. Notably, the church houses a shrine dedicated to St. Nikola Tavilic, a Franciscan missionary who became the first Croatian saint following his martyrdom in Jerusalem in 1391. The side altars showcase paintings from the 17th century, crafted by various Venetian baroque painters, including Matej Poncun. Adjacent to the main entrance of the church, there is a doorway leading to the monastery courtyard, where visitors can explore exhibits detailing its history. The collection includes ecclesiastical artwork and a library containing hand-written codices, 140 incunabula (books printed before 1500), and the "Sibenik Prayer" one of the oldest Croatian literary tributes written in Latin script around 1375. The church is open daily from 6:30am to 8:00pm, and while there is no entry fee, donations are greatly appreciated.

This exquisite church is located close to the park's center. Once inside, you are greeted by a breathtakingly beautiful carved ceiling adorned with gold and red accents. Despite its small size, the altar stands out as you enter the church. The building itself is charmingly situated in a picturesque setting. As you exit the church, you are treated to the sight of a stunning fountain filled with turtles. It is truly a lovely place to visit, and you can unwind in the park afterwards.

It can be quite difficult to locate this place when driving. Follow the directions on your sat nav, but make sure to go past the official-looking 'entrance and car park' as well as the informal-looking 'free national park parking' in a lay-by. Simply continue driving until you come across a yellow bridge, and that's when you'll know you have arrived. Once you reach your destination, you'll be amazed. You can enjoy a swim in the lake, have a delightful picnic, and the prices for beer are incredibly affordable!

It was absolutely amazing to witness the majestic waterfalls. We had pre-booked a boat from Skradin, but it was easy to catch an earlier return boat without any hassle. We brought along a picnic and enjoyed our lunch while soaking in the breathtaking views. The only letdown was the fact that swimming in the pools is no longer allowed. This information was not clearly communicated, as the official map still displayed the bathing pool. However, we managed to have a refreshing swim after leaving the park at Skradin beach, where the water was crystal clear and there was plenty of shade.
