Vidova Gora
User reviews
During our Dalmatian cruise, we had the opportunity to spend one day on Brac Island. We were traveling as a couple with our friends. Brac Island, pronounced 'Bratch', is the longest and most elevated island in central Dalmatia. It stretches 48km in length and is 14km wide, covering a total area of 394 square kilometers. The highest peak on the island is Vidova Gora, standing tall at 778m, making it the highest peak among the Adriatic islands. One of the most famous aspects of Brac is its beautiful white building stone, which has been quarried since ancient Roman times. The stone from Brac was even used to construct Diocletian's Palace in Split, and it continues to be used in the construction of buildings all over Europe and North America. Despite its close proximity to Split, Brac Island is not as touristy as the more glamorous islands of Hvar and Korcula further south. You won't find celebrities or tycoons gliding their yachts into the harbors of Brac, nor will you see politicians strolling through village streets. The island is also known for its rare variety of olives called buhavica. With over half a million olive trees, olive cultivation on Brac dates back to the Venetian years. As part of our bike cruise, we decided to bike from Bol to Supetar. Bol is a small village that boasts a stunning beach called Zlatni Rat or Golden Beach, which is considered one of Croatia's finest beaches. Depending on the time of day and the wind, the beach changes from shallow and shady to sunny and deep. On our way, we made a stop at an authentic olive oil museum in Skrip called Museum Uja. The museum offers tours where visitors can learn about the history of olive oil production on the island. We also had the opportunity to taste different varieties of olive oil and other local food products based on the Mediterranean diet. The oilery in Skrip was founded by the Josip Krstulovc family in 1864. In the early 20th century, Kruno and Mandica Krstulovic upgraded the oilery by purchasing a new olive press from Trieste called "Thomas Holt". The family continued to produce olive oil until 1963 when they had to stop due to the introduction of new technologies, specifically hydraulic presses. In 2013, Kruno Cukrov, the grandson of Kruno Krstulovic, and his family took on the challenge of restoring the old oilery. By July of that year, the oilery had become the Museum of Olive Oil in Skrip, which is now open to the public as a historical and cultural monument showcasing the history of olive oil production on Brac Island. Supetar, the capital and largest town of Brac Island, serves as the main entry point for visitors. It offers a few luxurious beach resorts, an 18th-century parish church, and a cemetery adorned with impressive sculptures.
