Croatian villas and sumptuous palaces are not adequately promoted in tourism; probably because tourism promotion is mainly focused on the mass tourism, what is not bad but we should not ignore the elite tourism, that makes many traditional tourist countries proud of. Croatia also has the potential to express itself in this area, and just by the touristic presentation of its rich building heritage where villas and palaces play an important role.
Central Croatia is the kingdom of baroque palaces and villas, arranged medieval castles and fortresses, organized for tourist offer.
In this sphere, a ‘dangerous’ rival is the area of southern Croatia, i.e. Dubrovnik region of Dalmatia, not only by the beauty of the sea coast that surrounds it but also by its distinguished and noble architectural style and cultural value.
The Old city of Dubrovnik, the finest precious stone of Croatian heritage in the sunniest Croatian tourist region, provides knowledge about the one thousand years blossoming of Croatian culture and art, enabled by victorious statehood of famous Dubrovnik Republic. Dubrovnik and its surroundings – Korcula island, homeland of Marko Polo; the green islands of Mljet, Lastovo and Elafiti with it’s picturesque villages; and the Peljesac peninsula with it’s vineyards and captain’s homes villas and rural buildings; Konavle magic valley; the fertile delta of the Neretva river – provide to a visitor tourist never before experienced excitement and pleasure.
Let us think about the vista of the Old city Dubrovnik from the sea: it is one of the most impressive vistas of the entire Mediterranean: so it is not surprising centers in the description of Dubrovnik in the List of the World heritage of UNESCO, which begins by words – ‘Pearl of the Adriatic on the Dalmatian coast’…
Invitation to tourists: Come and enjoy, place yourself in hotels, don’t forget the comforts of villas and palaces in the offer; enjoy in the cultural heritage and the beauty of nature, of which we all are an integral part.
Reasonably, many conquerors in the history wanted to occupy these beauties; and even in the recent war in the last decade of the 20st century. Today, there are no more troupes with guns at the Dubrovnik’s city walls, but peace-loving tourists and participants of cultural events. Instead of guns and rifles, today well-intentioned and playful tourists admire of this, the world’s unique panorama, trying to record it by cameras for the lasting memory.
Come and enjoy! Wherever staying around – everything is ‘within reach’; in everything you can participate and experience what, maybe, you didn’t even expect.
Dubrovnik area: beauty of nature, rich cultural heritage
About the cultural heritage of the Old City of Dubrovnik and its vicinity I wrote under the title „Dubrovnik, the jewel of Croatian cultural heritage“, covering the Konavle with Cavtat and Dubrovnik coast with Trsteno and its arboretum.
There are more data that are very interesting about the wider Dubrovnik area, due to its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Rich cultural heritage of the southernmost and sunniest tourist area, attract tourists of diferent tastes and requirements for a long time.
The territory of the Neretva River delta, due to the natural soil fertility and availability of fresh water, was populated since ancient times. The proof of that is Ancient Narona. Museum is built on the original location of sites, above part of the Roman Forum.
If we start from Dubovnik coast towards island of Korcula we will pas through the hilly wine-growing peninsula of Peljesac. The old center of the peninsula is the scenic town of Ston on the isthmus that connects it to the mainland. Between the Stone and the neighboring Mali Ston which is famous after the cultivation of oyster shells, are an impressive walls.
On the west side of the peninsula there is Orebic, the largest settlement of the peninsula and the center of the sea captains.
The largest island of the Dubrovnik region is Korcula. Korcula shows the splendor of the great buildings, it is specially emphasized in its main town of the same name Korcula. The appearance of the town, Korcula owes to the period of the 14. – 16. century, when the island of Korcula (unlike the rest of the Dubrovnik area) belonged to the Republic of Venice. Town of Korcula is well know by its raster of the streets that forms a fish bones shape and by its preserved Gothic and Renaissance buildings (the Cathedral of St Marc, a Franciscan monastery on an islet near the town of Badia, Korcula Municipal Museum etc.).
But the most interesting location to its visitors is the house of the Polo family because from her comes its most famous son, the world´s great adventurer, Marco Polo. People of Korcula carefully preserve their heritage, as it is shown through the maintenance of Church events, and even more in the medieval knight´s game Moreška (Moreska) which traditionally takes place one a year on the streets of the town.
Worthy inheritance is placed in two more places on the island, in Vela Luka and in Blato. In Vela Luka there is the most important prehistorc archaeological site in Dalmatia, called Vela Spila. Numerous ceramic, stone and bone artefacts were found here from Neolithic period, as well as preserved decorated tombs.
The most distant islands in Dubrovnik region are Mljet and Lastovo, known fot its natural heritage. The National Park Mljet anf the Nature Park Lastovo. On the little island in the middle of the biggest lake in the National Park Mljet there is an interesting cultural monument, the Benedictine monastery from the 17th century.
Elafiti islands in front of Dubrovnik, with its charming old villas and castles from the period of the greatest splendor of the famous Dubrovnik Republic will be breathtaking to the surprised visitor.
Come and enjoy the beauty of nature
and rich cultural heritage
of the Dubrovnik region.
Kvarner – There are twenty two ports for nautical tourism, of which 14 are marinas with 3,004 berths at sea and 1,766 dry berths form the base on which the Kvarner nautical-tourist offer rests and it is founded on two types of experiences: fun and education.
Its entertainment or fun part takes place through charter services, organized cruises, nautical-tourist regattas and competitions, while education applies to well organized sailing schools and schools teaching how to operate vessels.
The hinterland boasts some exceptional highland and mountain scenery, exemplified in two of its best known national parks, Plitvice lakes and Risnjak.
Tourism in Croatia began here, on the westernmost section of the Kvarner coast, when the Austro-Hungarian social elite began visiting to enjoy the freshimage
There are few cities that boasts such a beautiful location on the cliffs above the sea, and there are few places that nave so well-preserved stone Medieval walls and towers.
Dubrovnik is the jewel in the sunniest Croatian tourist region, in Dubrovacko-Neretvanska county which spread sits area near the sea cost. In this county Dubrovnik is the most important but by no means the only cultural jewel.
The main Dubrovnik´s streets within the Old City Walls is Stradun. On its western end there is a large Fountain and at the eastern end, on the Luza Square ther is Orlando´s Column, a symbol of Dubrovnik´s freedom. Luza Square is a favorite meeting place for tourists and a major area for the maintenance of different events, especially the major cultural event, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
By the Luza Square there are the most important secular buildings of the medieval Dubrovnik – Gothic-Renaissance Rector´s Palace which was the center of the Dubrovnik authorities, and the palace Sponza. Both were built in the 15th century, as well as the most major buildings in the Old Town. Rector´s Palace is spangled with an interested Atrium which is now a popular theatrical stage for performances. In the interior of the Palace there is a museum which held numerous furniture, paintings and sculptures. Palace Spinoza, former customs house, now the Archives of Dubrovnik, also boasts with an interesting Atrium.
Along the Luza Square there are the main religious buildings of the Old City – Curch of St Blaise, Dubrovnik´s patron saint and the Cathedral of the Mary´s Assumption. Both decorated with baroque splendor because they were built in 17th century, after the catastrophic earthquake in 1667. Inside the Cathedral there are magnificent organ and a treasury of valuable exhibits. The most important are reliquary head of St Blaise. In the city of Dubrovnik, there are few harmonious monasteries with luxurious interiors. The Church which is inside the Jesuit monastery has beautiful decorated inside walls; the Franciscan monastery keeps a collection of an old pharmaceutical kit; and a Dominican monastery has a rich collection of paintings. Among the religious buildings of other religions, the Synagogue from the 15th century is the most important building which is also, by the continuity of using, the second oldest Synagogue in Europe.
Dubrovnik is well known by its museums too, which are annually visited up to half a million tourists. With the most visited Dubrovnik´s museum in Rector´s Palace, the Maritime Museum is where you can learn all about the maritime history of Dubrovnik. From the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
Dubrovnik surrounding areas are characterized by the harmony of architecture, wrapped in a green environment. This is particular evident in the southernmost corner of the Croatia, in a fertile valley Konavle.
The main Konavle´s Picturesque town Cavtat is the birthplace of the great Croatian painter Vlaho Bukovac. His birth house is converted into a gallery of his paintings. Another valuable ornament of town of Cavtat is a family Racic mausoleum dated from 1921, the work of the Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
The coast west of Dubrovnik, is a place known by Dubrovnik nobles´s summer villas surrounded by greenery. On one of these properties, in the picturesque village Trsteno, there is the most beautiful Croatian arboretum with various kinds of subtropical plants and trees. Arboretum is decorated with sculptures, the most notable is the statue of the Greek god Poseidon. Arboretum offers nicely decorated resting places from which one can enjoy the view of the open sea.
Further west, there is the most special part of Dubrovnik region, the Neretva River delta with its preserved landscapes and picturesque places along the Neretva River. Town Opuzen stands out by its beauty. Not far from the largest city of the Neretva area, Metkovic, there is a village Vid that is located at the site of the former Roman Narona. On the original location of the sites there is a museum built over the part of Roman Forum with a number of imperial statues carved in marble.
Come and meet Dubrovnik region.
